MOVE IT: Shadow Houses

Move It! is a twice monthly series of kinetic art making nights at The Stringpullers Studio. This week make pull-tab animated silhouette shadow houses. Drop-in making session from 5-8pm, for adults and kids with an adult. Free. The Puppet Library will also be available for on site reading, and the main Gallery with the Artist Alley group show will be open. Part of Third Thursday Open Studios at Artist Alley.

First Thursday Open Studios

The Stringpullers studio will be open for the first First Thursday Open Studios of the season. The newly plumped-up Puppet Library will be available for on site reading. No kinetic art making tonight, but if you have an unfinished project you started with Linda, this would be a good time to come finish. Chalice Well Creations, Polka Dot Tails, Happiest Days Design, and Sally Ryan will also be open. 950 Danby Road, Itahca, NY, across from Ithaca College. Enter through the back entrance of the South Hill Business Campus.

CAP Artist Networking Night & Gallery Grand Opening

South Hill Business Campus will host The Community Arts Partnership’s Artist Networking Night on Tuesday, October 17 from 5-8. It will also be the grand opening of the new Gallery at South Hill, the new heart of Aritst Alley where the Stringpullers studio is located. At 6pm, many of the 45 new studios will be open, including the Stringpullers. 950 Danby Road, across from Ithaca College.

Clay School / Stringpullers 2019 Summer Camp

For the first time the Stringpullers will partner with The Clay School to offer an arts day camp for ages 7-13 from August 19-30 at Artist Alley in Ithaca, NY. In the mornings, campers will work on hand building and wheel techniques with Clay School instructors. In the afternoons they’ll explore kinetic sculpture with Linda, inspired by Alexander Calder’s circus figures. Space is extremely limited. Registration is on the Clay School website.

2019 National Puppetry Festival in Minneapolis

In July Linda will attend the Puppeteers of America National Puppetry Festival in Minneapolis, Minnesota were she’ll participate in a Wayang performance intensive with Kathy Foley and I Nyoman Sedana. One of her marionettes, May, will be included in the Festival Exhibit. Thanks to the Puppeteers of America Festival Scholarship Committee for making this trip possible.

Linda returns to the Marionette Strand at the National Puppetry Conference in Waterford, CT, this time to study marionette performance with Alice Gottschalk of FAB Theater, Stuttgart, Germany. All of the participants will work to develop a short piece to be performed at the end of the conference, on June 14 & 15. Tickets available through the O’Neill box office. Paper Theater Residency at St. Thomas

The Stringpullers return for their 10th year with the St Thomas Day School’s Arts Week in New Haven, CT. This year, thanks to a Specific Opportunity Stipend Grant from the Community Arts Partnership of Tompkins County, we’ll be staying for the week to develop short table top theater pieces with grades 3-6 to be performed at the end of the program. With a focus on adaptation of classic animal tales, the students will collaborate to storyboard, write dialogue, build sets and puppets, develop characters, direct, and puppeteer, to experience a complete theatrical production process from start to finish on a small, achievable scale. Performances on Friday open to STTDS family and friends.

Drop-in making session from 5-8pm. For adults and kids with an adult. Free. Part of First Thursday Open Studios at Artist Alley.

This time we’ll turn the lights off at 7:45pm and invite to the shadow stage anyone who’d like to try performing a short scene with what they made that night. Skills not required! Just an adventurous spirit!

Linda hosts the first in a series of kinetic art making sessions as part of Third Thursday Open Studios at the new Artist Alley art colony. On Thursday, Feburary 21, drop in from 5-8pm and try your hand at making a simple cam-driven automaton (art moved by mechanics) out of cardboard and other common materials. Visit other artists working in their studios that night, including Margaret Reed and Carol LaBorie. Free. Artistic and mechanical mastery not needed. For adults, and kids accompanied by an adult.

Summer Flood at the Crankie Cabaret

Linda will debut Summer Flood, a shadow crankie performance, at the second annual Crankie Cabaret presented by LilyPad puppets at the Cherry Artspace. Cranked to the Irish ballad Plain Girl’s Lament by Ceoltori combined with the strumming of Matt Ocone, the 30 foot intricately cut Tyvek scroll merges the story of a determined girl with Linda’s own recent experience with flooding through the theme of water.

Linda returns to Fairfield University and Theatre Fairfield for a third semester as their adjunct puppetry faculty. She'll be designing and building a bunraku-style life-sized puppet and training puppeteers to play the part of Kiddie in Rachel Crother's A Man's World. Directed by Marti LoMonacco at the Quick Center. The Stringpullers bring puppet making and performance to the Connecticut Burn Camp, a summer camp free to children who've survived severe burn injuries. Opening night festivities July 9th starting at the Arts Council from 5-7pm, the party keeps rolling till 10 at Koffee!
